Community Companion Volunteer

Description

Becoming a companion for an elderly person in the Wythenshawe area. This will include the following over a 3 week cycle 1. A home visit for a chat and a cuppa 2. An "how are you today?" phone call 3. A post card or letter.
After training and model visits you will be matched to an elderly individual who has been referred to us because they are lonely or socially isolated. You will have empathy with our client group and be able to work on your own initiative. It is important that you can maintain conversations and choose topics that interest the elderly person. You will be confident, reliable and willing to undertake further training.

I manage Wythenshawe Good Neighbours a community interest group hosted by GMAddVentures with initial funding from Manchester City Council and Equity Foundation. The main aims of our group are to reduce loneliness and isolation of the elderly people by providing social activity evenings and weekends. We do this in three ways; 1. Sunday afternoon teas held in cafes and community spaces in Wythenshawe 2. Befriending and companionship where volunteers visit the elderly in their homes evenings and weekends 3. The engagement of the over 50s retired, redundant residents of Wythenshawe in building capacity of this and other volunteer led projects I have over 20 years of experience in building community initiatives and training and supporting mentors and volunteers. I am educated to degree level and I am a qualified teacher/trainer/lecturer and have a Masters with merit in script writing for radio and TV
