We are a Healthy Living Centre in South Bradford, based on Tong Street and work across the South Bradford area; Holme Wood, Bierley, Wyke, Buttershaw, Gt. Horton, Queensbury. We are also an accredited training centre and we sometimes run courses for our volunteers and also for our service users to build confidence and pathways into employment. Our projects are many and varied, but they all help reduce inequalities in health. We take referrals into our projects from Doctors, Nurses, other community groups and people who just contact us direct. Examples of some of our projects: Wellbeing Cafe (for people with dementia and their carers), Connect Club for isolated over 50's, Take our tablet beginners computer course, several exercise sessions from active in ageing to bollywood, various cooking/nutrition programmes including cook & wean and weight management. Funding for our domestic abuse and alcohol work concludes in September. In the summer holidays we run a holiday scheme for children living in Buttershaw. Our funding to run projects comes from Public Health, Bradford/ Bradford Council/ the Lottery/ the People's Health Trust We could not run our projects without volunteers who give so much to enable things to happen.
I work in Special Educational Needs, specialise in English and have 3 children (the elder two are now at university). My house was repossessed last year and rather than scrabble back onto the property ladder I'd rather look into alternative ways of creating a home - for myself and for others - and am fascinated by the tinyhouse/microhomes/smallspaces movement
With too many local people living on the edge of poverty in South Central Manchester every day many are forced to send their children to bed hungry but the good news is that you can be part of the solution. Bridging the Gap, in partnership with The Trussell Trust (www.truselltrust.org) and local churches, has started a ‘foodbank’ to cover the areas of Hulme [ which opened on April 1st] Whalley Range – St Edmunds Church and Moss Side. We welcome volunteers to help with a range of opportunities.
